Jeollanam-do

Jeollanam-do is rich in Korean folk customs. Traditional Korean cultural practices such as pansori (Korean opera) is well preserved here. It is proud to offer visitors with various tourist attractions such as national parks and coastlines, as well as numerous islets in the sea. Jeollanam-do is also recognized for a variety of special dishes and fresh seafood.

Popular Cities

Gurye-gun is situated between the majestic peaks of Mt. Jirisan and the running waters of Seomjingang River. As the first national state park, it houses some of Korea’s most important temples such as Hwaeomsa Temple, Cheoneunsa Temple and Yeongoksa Temple. The beautiful landscapes are an ideal spot for festivals held there such as the Sansuyu Flower Festival, the Royal Azaleas Festival and the Piagol Maple Festival.

Recommended Destinations

Situated at the southwest of Mt. Jirisan, Hwaeomsa Temple is one of the 10 most famous temples in Korea. It was constructed in the fifth year of King Jinheung’s reign (544) during the Silla Era, but was burnt down during Japanese Invasion, Jeongyujaeran in 1592(*80. Including the main building Daeungjeon, the temple was rebuilt during the Joseon Period.

The path to the temple lies along the valley named Hwaeomsa Temple Valley. It also takes you to Nogodan Plateau of Mt. Jirisan. With Korean traditional straw-roofed houses and a water mill, you can find a cozy place named Siuidongsan, which means the Hill of Poetry, to take a rest at your right on the way to the temple.

Ten Sceneries of Mt. Jirisan Deep valleys and the unique mountain shape as well as different sceneries according to height level is what makes Mt. Jirisan incredible. It consists of numerous peaks, and is known to be well-preserved and clean. Enjoy viewing many particularly beautiful sceneries that cannot be seen elsewhere. The most beautiful selections are called 'Mt. Jirisan Ten Sceneries.'

Piagol Valley is located between Nogodan and Banya peak on Mt. Jirisan. It is named so because in the fall the leaves in the valley turn crimson red, and is also known as one of the ten most beautiful sceneries of Mt. Jirisan. It is famous for its fall colors, but it is also a beautiful place to visit all year around. During the spring time, the royal azaleas cover the entire area, and in the summer the lush forest fills the valley.

Sinan-gun is the home of many islands. It encompasses about 100 inhabited Islands and 700 uninhabited Islands. Among the islands, Heuksando Island and Hongdo Island are famous for their peculiar rock formations and cliffs. All these attractions can be found in the Dadohae Maritime National Park.

Recommended Destinations

Heuksando Island is located at the southern end of Korea about 92.7 km away from Mokpo.  It is composed of 11 uninhabited islands and 89 inhabited islands.  Because of its natural beauty, it has been designated as part of Dadohae National Marine Park along with the nearby islands.

Hongdo Island is located 115 km from southwest of Mokpo Harbor. It is composed of about 20 islands, and because it has an usual reddish-brown color about it, it is called Hongdo(Red Island). When the sunsets over the island, the whole area takes on a red hue.
