Jeollabuk-do is bountiful in traditional cultural heritages and historical sites. It is where pansori (traditional Korean opera) originated. It is also home to Namwon, the setting of the famous pansori ‘Chunhyangjeon’, and Jeonju, a city famous for delicate and delectable foods. Jeollabuk-do is easy to access and visitors can enjoy natural tourist attractions such as Mt. Naejangsan, Byeonsan Peninsula and Mt. Deogyusan, as well as other traditional Korean cultural experiences. Popular Cities Buan-gun is famous for being part of the Mt. Byeonsan Peninsula. From Inner Mt. Byeonsan to Outer Mt. Byeonsan, this peninsula holds many beautiful attractions. Buan’s mountains and coasts attract tourists all year round.
Byeonsan Peninsula National Park stretches 35km and covers five townships along the coast. Designated as a national park in 1988, it is the only national park in the country that has both a seashore and mountain. Naesosa Temple was built by Buddhist Monk Hye-Gu in 633A.D. during the Silla Dynasty, and was rebuilt by Monk Cheong-Min during the Joseon Dynasty in 1633. The Dae-Ungbojeon Pagoda of the temple was built at this time. With the main sanctuary as the center point, the area is a 500m radius and was named a culturally protected areain 1986.
Muju is distinguished enough to have earned the nickname “Korean Alps”. The entire area is covered with mountains, with the Geumgang River running through the countless valleys. Some grand mountains in the area include Mt. Jeoksangsan, Mt. Deogyusan, and Mt. Daedeoksan. Muju is also famous for its wealth of fireflies, and hosts a firefly festival every year.
Muju Gucheondong Valley is located within Deokyusan in Jeonrabuk-do, and is often called Mujugucheon-dong, which refers to a 25km stretch of land and water from Najetongmun to Deokyusan Mountain's Baekryeonsa Temple. Muju Gucheondong Valley is not a deep valley. But the valley flows through a lush forest that's quite beautiful. The calm and soothing sounds of the river is very refreshing. Muju resort is located in Mt. Deokyusan, and is a representative mountain resort. It blends in beautifully with the scenery of Mt. Deokyusan National Park, and is the perfect place to enjoy winter sports.
