Situated in the center of Korea, Chungcheongbuk-do is the only inland province in the nation. Due to the geographic location of the province, this area was a strategic point for transportation many years ago. It is abundant in cultural heritages and natural tourist destinations such as Mt. Songnisan, Mt. Sobaeksan, Mt. Woraksan, Daecheongho Lake and Chungjuho Lake. Popular Cities Chungju is a place of natural wonder, blessed with the waters of the Namhangang River and beautiful mountain ranges. It is also abundant with hot springs such as Suanbo Hot Springs, which is renown for improving health. In addition, Chungju is famous for being the founding ground for Korean martial arts and holds an international martial arts festival every year.
Danyang is a spot created by nature itself. Deep mountains and the Namhangang River running through it make for an ideal setting. Famous attractions are the Chungjuho Lake created by the Chungju Dam, and Danyang’s eight famous landscapes, including the Dodam Sambong Summit. The Royal Azaleas Festival and the Full Moon Festival are held annually at Mt. Sobaeksan.
Gosu Cave: designated as a natural monument, Gosu Cave is a limestone cave situated in Danyang-gun. This extensive cave is 1,300 meters deep, and is well known for its beauty. The name Gosu comes from the fact that in the past, the area was filled with thickets of tall grass. Rough stone instruments were excavated at the cave entrance, which revealed that this area was home to the prehistoric human beings. Seonam Valley: includes three of the eight sceneries in Danyang, the Sangseon Rock, Junseon Rock, and Haseon Rock. The valley flows in from Mt. Wolaksan, and because it is big and has many interesting looking rocks, it has been famous for a long time. Among the rocks, the area that has the Haseon Rock is said to be the most beautiful in Seonam Valley.
Jecheon-si Historic relics from the Paleolithic Age to Joseon Dynasty are spread throughout the city of Jecheon. Jecheon-si has the oldest reservoir in Korea, Uirimji, Mt. Woraksan National Park, Chungju Dam, Cheongpung Culture Complex, Songgye Valley, and the Baeron Seongji (Catholic Holy Place) and many more.
Mt. Woraksan National Park: is the 17th to be designated a national park in 1984. Narrow streams, elegantly green pine trees, and interesting rocks make this national park and mountain area very beautiful. If you go up to Jubong Peak, you can see Chungjuho Lake and the open scenery below the mountain. Even in the summer, parts of the mountain still have snow on it, and for this reason the mountain is called Mt. Haseolsan, meaning snow in the summer.
