  • Hyoseok Culture FestivalHyoseok Culture Festival: 4 - 14 Sep 2009
    Venue: Gangwon-do Pyeongchang-gun Bongpyeong-myeon Wongil-ri 764-1

    Bongpyeong in Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do Province is not only the birthplace of Lee Hyo-seok, a leading Korean novelist, but also the backdrop for his most famous short story When the Buckwheat Blossoms. The story, included in Korean high school textbooks, is an excellent description of the feelings of the Korean people as well as the natural beauty of Bongpyeong.



  • Yeongdong Nangye Traditional Music Festival: 4 - 8 Sep 2009Yeongdong Nangye Traditional Music Festival
    Venue: Nangyesa Temple, Nangye Traditional Music Center, The whole area of Yeongdong-eup, Yeongdong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do

    Yeongdong, where the Nangye Traditional Korean Music Festival will be held, is the hometown of Park Yeon, one of Korea's three top traditional music experts. Park Yeon created the theory of Korean traditional music during the Joseon dynasty and also produced various instruments such as the string instrument, percussion instrument, and wind instrument. In addition to his creations, he is also very famous for his outstanding musical performances. In order to praise Park Yeon's achievements his other name, Nangye, has become the main symbol representing the traditional music festival. The upcoming festival will celebrate its 41st anniversary which opens from August 21st until the 24th at Yeongdong-eup Yongdu Park and country stadium.



  • Chungju World Martial Arts FestivalChungju World Martial Arts Festival: 23 - 27 Sep 2009
    Venue: Chungju Tangeumdae UN Peace Park

    This festival showcases all of the world's martial arts forms, as well as Korea's traditional martial arts.
    This festival opens with the theme 'Five Thousand Years of Spirit and Martial Arts', showcasing demonstrations of Taekkyeon, Taekwondo, and Hapkido by Korea's traditional martial arts groups. Martial artists from 30 nations, including Japan, China, New Zealand, France, have been invited to the festival, and will be taking part in demonstrations and performances. Programs have been prepared for non-Korean speakers and visitors will get a change to try out many of the martial arts on display.



  • Anseong Namsadang Baudeogi Festival: 22 - 27 Aug 2009Anseong Namsadang Baudeogi Festival
    Venue: Anseongsi Gangbyeon park

    The 'Namsadang' were troupes of entertainers who traveled around the country during the latter years of the Joseon Dynasty (1392~1910), performing dances, songs, and acrobatics at marketplaces and villages. Today they are more commonly known as performance artists. 'Baudeogi (1848~1870)', which is the festival's theme, was a woman who was the leader of one of Anseong's Namsadang groups, which at the time was thought to be the best Namsadang group in Korea. The festival consists of over 200 different events. Visitors can watch many Namsadang performances, as well as folk performances by groups from other countries.

 

 

  • Andong International Maskdance Festival: 25 Sep - 4 Oct 2009Andong International Maskdance Festival
    Venue: Maskdance Park, Hahoe Folk village

    The Andong region has many highly renowned historic and cultural sites, such as Hahoe Village, however the major cultural attraction of the region is the Andong International Mask Dance Festival.

    Visitors to the festival will enjoy the many performances of Korea's traditional mask dances. These dances are an important part of Korea's heritage, in particular the byeolsingut talnori dance, which has been designated an Important Intangible Cultural Asset of Korea. International mask dance troupes have also been invited to the festival, so visitors will be exposed to folk cultures from around the world.
    As well as performances, events in the festival program also include mask dance competitions and mask dance lessons, which are available for international visitors.
